Why did the author it was funny?

I think this joke was supposed to be funny because when the people get tired from the excitement, they won’t get excited about the execution anymore. I also think is funny because when people are too mad they tend to get tired easily so they are playing with words, and making it even more funny. I don’t really get the joke to be honest, I think is a little dumb.

Was execution an effective method for punishing serious crimes?

In the old days their morals and priorities were totally different, so maybe if you were to ask someone in that era they would tell you that it was appropriate and effective.
